Founders of the new robotics coalition
The 2026 Barcelona Declaration is the result of cooperation between four industry leaders: A3 - Association for Advancing Automation (USA), IFR - International Federation of Robotics, VDMA Robotics + Automation (Germany) and AER Automation (Spain). Their joint initiative transforms previous declarations into a lasting structure for international cooperation. Together, they represent more than 3,000 companies and organizations active in the field of robotics and automation worldwide.
The founders not only express their common commitment, but also establish a specific framework for action. As part of the Declaration, they have committed to maintaining ongoing dialogue with governments and public institutions, providing technical expertise and industry data. This distinguishes them from previous initiatives that lacked permanent implementation mechanisms.
Ten priorities for governments
The Declaration contains ten specific priorities that should be supported by countries regardless of their level of industrial maturity. These include: introducing national robotics strategies, investing in collaborative and assistive robotics, promoting technology education in schools, and ensuring access to technology for all social groups.
An important element is also the principle of "regulate wisely" - i.e., avoiding excessive restrictions that could hinder innovation. The organizations emphasize that robotics should not only be regulated, but also supported by public policy. In particular, they stress the need to avoid regional standards in incentives and regulations, promoting global harmonization.
Why this is more than just a declaration
The difference between these initiatives and previous ones lies in the structure and commitment. The Barcelona Declaration is not a one-time statement - it is a lasting framework for cooperation. The signatory organizations have committed to publishing regular reports on progress in implementing the priorities, which ensures transparency and accountability.
In addition, the initiative is to be gradually expanded to include other industry associations. This means that it is not a closed group, but an open platform for a global coalition. In the future, it may also include companies from developing countries, which will significantly impact the balance in access to technology.
