Mode change without disassembly - a new concept in soft robotics

The new fabric-based pneumatic actuator enables changing the operating mode without the need for its disassembly or redesign. Researchers and other institutions have designed a system that uses limiting modules attached with buttons to the fabric sleeve. This makes it possible to quickly, tool-free, and repeatedly switch between four modes: isotropic expansion, contraction, bending, and twisting.

In experiments, a maximum bending angle of approximately 60 degrees was achieved at a pressure of 24 kPa and a twisting angle of close to 90 degrees. It is worth emphasizing that these results were obtained without the need to change the physical structure of the actuator - it was enough to move the limiting modules to the appropriate places. This opens up new possibilities in the design of soft robots that must perform various tasks without the need to replace the entire device.

For the reader, it is most important to separate confirmed information from predictions about the further development of the described situation. Subsequent conclusions should be based on official actions, publications and announcements when they become available. This approach allows maintaining the proper context and avoiding attributing effects to current changes that have not yet been confirmed by the available material.

Touch sensor with flexible mounting options

As part of the system development, researchers introduced a capacitive touch sensor module that can be mounted anywhere on the surface of the actuator. This sensor exhibits monotonic, force-dependent capacitance increase with low hysteresis of approximately 12%. Studies confirmed stable cyclic responses even under constant load. This means that the sensor can be used for precise real-time monitoring of contact with the environment - crucial for tasks such as gripping or manipulating delicate objects.

The advantage of this solution is its flexibility: it does not require special mounting locations or additional structural elements. It can be connected to any point on the actuator, which allows adapting the functionality of the device to a specific task without changing the actuator itself. This represents an important step forward towards highly adaptable and multifunctional soft robots that can independently adapt to changing working conditions.

Applications and development prospects

Researchers built soft robot arms consisting of several such actuators, which demonstrated the ability to change motion during operation - e.g., switching between gripping and moving without the need to stop or disassemble. This opens up new possibilities in rehabilitation robotics, logistics and human-machine interaction, where devices with high functional flexibility are needed. For example, such an actuator can be used in therapeutic gloves to assist movement, which automatically adapt to different phases of rehabilitation.

Although the results are promising, it should be remembered that the study concerned laboratory experiments. There is no information about long-term use, resistance to damage or scalability of the system in larger structures. Additionally, no data was provided on material consumption or the durability of button-fastened modules after many cycles. These aspects remain for further analysis and may affect the practical implementation of the technology in real applications.

Significance for the future of soft robotics

The new concept of a reconfigurable actuator represents an important step forward in the development of soft robotics. Traditional pneumatic actuators are usually designed for one specific mode of motion, which limits their application. The new solution eliminates this barrier through modularity and ease of assembly. As a result, robots can be more flexible, easier to maintain and less expensive to produce - only one actuator base with different limiting modules is needed.

The technology may find applications not only in industry, but also in medicine, education or home support systems. Its key advantage is the ability to adapt to changing needs without the need to manufacture new devices. Although this is not yet a commercial implementation, research shows the real potential for developing highly adaptable and functionally flexible robotic systems that can independently adapt to different tasks.
